On February 9th, 2017, people from around the Tucson-area and Apache Stronghold gathered at a rally and send-off celebration for those who will be marching in the 3rd Annual March to Oak Flat, February 16 - 19, 2017. The march brings attention to the unjust and illegitimate Apache land give-away orchestrated by John McCain in a fly-by-night deal, the land's certain destruction at the hands of global mining giant Rio Tinto, and highlights the determination of the Apache people to protect their ancestral and sacred lands.
Speakers included Wendsler Nosie, Sr., David Garcia, a member of the Tohono O'Odham Nation, Naelyn Pike, the Reverend Alison Harington from Southside Presbyterian Church, and others.
"You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive."
~ James Baldwin
